Experience Genuine Insight

What is most essential is to clearly see one’s true nature Kenshō - and integrate this into daily life.

About

Our Community

We are a Rinzai Zen practice sangha located in Madison, Wisconsin and online.

We focus on rigorous Zen training, using classical methods, such as Zazen seated mediation, proper breath and Hara (abdominal) development, integrated body usage, Kōan introspection method, and chanting practices.

All are welcome. No experience is necessary. We invite you to explore this Zen path with us.

Rinzai Zen

Zen holds direct seeing into one’s nature (Kenshō) as essential. Such experiential knowledge is the life-blood and vitality of genuine Zen practice, upon which all else is built. This is why Zen is described as a “direct” or “expedient” path.

In our modern times, Rinzai Zen, especially, has held true to these classical values and the unshakable faith in human ability to experience the most profound spiritual realization.

In Zen practice, sitting in community and working with a teacher, we are given clarifying instructions and methods to allow us to deeply probe the most fundamental questions of: “Who am I?” What is this life?” “What is this reality itself, experienced here and now?” Practicing wholeheartedly, we may finally encounter directly the answers to all of these questions.

Teacher

Daiho Wagner Roshi

Daiho began his practice path in 1998, taking jukai (lay ordination), and monastic ordination in 2003, subsequently training as a monk until 2007.

Daiho was recognized as Jushoku (fully trained Zen priest) in 2022 and finally, in 2023, he received dharma transmission and was recognized as a fully empowered teacher.
